As ambiguous and rich in associations as the woodpecker is as a real and symbolic figure, so too does this work by Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber elude any hard-and-fast interpretation: one cannot be quite sure whether the woodpeckers stuck in the façade are not in fact monstrous acupuncture needles stuck in the body of the city, seeking to restore its energetic balance at strategic crossing points – as the diorama Shanghai (2012) would seem to suggest. Or are they pins marking the topology of the city as a foraging zone for valorisation?

The publication was released on occasion of the exhibition “Crazy Horse, a disruptive trap” at Kunstraum Dornbirn and comprises the oeuvre of Steinbrener/Dempf & Huber of the last ten years.
